DPS practices on pig tracheas

-A A +A

Nettles Sausage Company, of Lake City, donated pig tracheas to provide EMS personnel with a lifelike experience for the advanced airway techniques as part of this quarter's safety training with the Levy County Department of Public Safety.

The tracheas were used to facilitate the execution of a technique known as cricothyrotomy, which is used to establish an airway in patients when other, more routine methods, have failed.

The procedure involves placing a tube through an incision in the cricothyroid membrane found just below the Adam’s apple. Although cricothyrotomy is rarely necessary, it is a potentially life-saving application of last resort and Paramedics must maintain familiarity with the procedure.
