Dixie County had to work overtime to beat Chiefland 14-6 to win the Minor Division of the Tri-County Championship in Cross City on Saturday.
From the onset, things didn’t go well for Chiefland as its first three offensive plays were stopped behind the line.
“It was a great defensive battle by both teams,” said Shane Keene, who coaches Chiefland’s 9-10- year-old team. “There were a couple of unfinished plays, a couple of missed tackles and missed blocks, and every play counts in a close game like this.”
Indeed, the team fought to a 6-all tie at the end of regulation. Dixie County scored first but Chiefland answered in the second quarter with a 22-yard touchdown run by Briar Keene. It was set up by a fumble recovery by Brandon Bowers.
In overtime, Dixie County scored on its possession from the 10-yard line, but Chiefland was unable to duplicate the feat. Chiefland had beaten Dixie County 14-0 during the regular season.
“There was no quitting in this team,” Keene said. “To get to this point and be 5-1, it means they gave it everything they had every single day.”
