April is recognized as National 9-1-1 Education Month, and, with this in mind, the Levy County Department of Public Safety (LCDPS) approached the Chiefland Elementary School to present 9-1-1 information to children. LCDPS invited Chiefland Fire Rescue to join the team to deliver the information to students in grades 3 through 5. The two Departments were at the school for three hours April 2, teaching the children when to call 911 and what information they would be asked if they ever had to make that call.
Additionally, students were taught about what to do if a stranger ever tried to pick them up and also about planning fire escape routes with their families, including identifying a meeting place outside the home in the event of a fire. The information was delivered to several hundred children who also had the opportunity to see emergency response equipment up close.
