Levy County Emergency Management Diroector Mark Johnson informed the County Commission at the start of its meeting today that Duke Energy/Progress Energy Florida has announced it will shut down its troubled Crystal River nuclear plant.
The announcement was made to plant employees this morning according to a company press release.
Johnson said the decommissioning of the CR3 plant, as it is known, will not affect the plans for the proposed two-unit Levy Nuclear Plant. The license application for that plant is working its way through the Nuclear Regulatory Commission process.
