Crate Tucker cattle at Port Myacka

-A A +A

In 1952, I came home from boot camp just in time to get in on a cattle trapping, cattle roping and cattle shooting deal in a rough pasture south of the St. Lucie Canal.

An old cowman had some cattle he had to get off of a leased place. He had decided the easiest way was to sell the cattle in the pasture to my dad and let him worry about how to get them. The way the transaction was to work was a good chance for us to make some money.

The owner, Mr. Tucker, and my father would ride through the area and count the cattle they could see and that would be the basis for the amount of the payment. My Dad and Mr. Tucker knew they would never see all the cattle but this was probably a fair way as any because they both knew we would never be able to catch all the cattle they didn't see.
