One person was killed and five others sent to the hospital Tuesday morning after two vehicles hit head on along a stretch of highway in north Chiefland.

Rescue personnel arrived at the accident in front of Beef O'Brady's on U.S. 19 a little bit before 10:30 a.m. to find the driver of a blue sedan dead on the scene, according to the Levy County Department of Public Safety.

The others involved, five occupants of an inmate transport van from Hillsborough County, had to be taken to Shands Hospital, one by helicopter.

The Levy County Sheriff's Office showed up to help with security and traffic control, though the Florida Highway Patrol is handling the investigation of the accident, which is still pending.

Emergency crews from Chiefland Fire and Rescue, LCDPS — Medic 1,2 and 6 and Battalion 1, Air Methods and AirLife11 were on the scene.
