Replacing former Chiefland Police Department officer Calvin Hardge effective Dec. 20, a member of the Chiefland High School class of 1991 joins the CPD.

Al Horne, 35, has been working for the past year as a correctional officer with the Levy County Sheriff's Office. He was born in Chiefland and has lived here his whole life.

Before serving at the Levy County Jail, Horne was a welder for many years, he said.

CPD Chief Robert Douglas is very happy with the new addition to the force.

"We're excited to get Al here," Douglas said. "I believe he's going to be a great officer in the department. He's a Levy County homegrown man who has roots here, and we expect him to be with us for many more years."

Hardge is looking for a larger department, Douglas said, and that is why he left the CPD.

The LCSO will miss Horne's service at the jail, said Lt. Evan Sullivan, LCSO spokesman.

"He (Horne) will be greatly missed by the Sheriff's Office," Sullivan said. "We wish him well in his new career."

The number of sworn law enforcement officers remains at 11 at the CPD, Chief Douglas said - including him.
