County passes on old Bronson school property

-A A +A
By Lou Elliott Jones, Editor

The Levy County Commission has decided that the search for new courthouse space will not include the old Bronson High School property at its back door.
It's a blow to Clerk of Court Danny Shipp's plan to purchase and renovate the property. He told the commissioners on Tuesday that members of the county's courthouse space committee met with representatives of the School Board to negotiate for the purchase of the 20 acres and the buildings — the old school which houses Hilltop School, the gymnasium and portable buildings.
The school board's asking price was $13 million. Shipp said the committee discussed buying just part of the property inside a walled-in area to secure more parking for the courthouse, but the asking price was $9 million.
County Property Appraiser Oz Barker had two appraisals done and the property was valued at $4.6 million.
"We decided we would be good friends," Shipp said. "We had not met a negotiable price to bring the board. They do have plans for it if we don't purchase it."
Shipp said he just wanted to put closure on the deal.
