BRONSON - Employees of the Levy County Board of County Commissioners will find it easier to run for office as a result of a policy amendment on Feb. 19.
A policy adopted in 2004 noted in part that, "Employees who run for elected public office will be placed on a leave of absence on the date they open a campaign account through the Supervisor of Elections Office to run for public office or the date of filing qualification, whichever happens earlier."
County Coordinator Freddie Moody said an employee asked him about the policy because he or she was considering running for an office. He said the first policy was adopted in 2000.
After the revisions to create the 2004 policy, he said, there were people who might have been affected if they had sought election after then - including Executive Director of Tourist Development Carol McQueen, who is the former mayor of Fanning Springs. McQueen chose against running for reelection.
Moody said this policy gives an advantage to candidates from the private sector, and to candidates from any other county constitutional office, because it only imposes the restriction on County Commission employees.
