Controlled burn gets out of control in Cedar Key Scrub - UPDATED

By Kellie Parkin

What began as a prescribed fire Thursday morning in the Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve became a wildfire around noon when unpredictable weather conditions caused fire specialists to lose control, according to Senior Forestry Ranger Jerry Horton.

Crews have worked continuously since Thursday and as of Saturday evening the fire was mostly contained, said Jeff DiMaggio, Fire Management Officer for the Florida DEP Division of Parks and Recreation. There are only a few hot spots left, he said.

Preliminary reports estimate the fire to be approximately 150 acres.

Crews from Cedar Key, Rosewood, Chiefland and Bronson fire departments were on hand to fight the blaze with the Division of Forestry and the DEP Florida Parks Service. The Levy County Sheriff's Office, Levy County EMS and Williston Fire Department were also on scene.

“We had it under control until the sea breeze kicked in about 3 o’clock,” Horton said. “It made it bigger and pushed it back toward the road (CR 347).”

No residences have been damaged and only a couple of homes were evacuated as a precaution, Horton said.
