In 1501, a young, 25 year-old, Michelangelo began work on his 17 foot-tall sculpture of David. It was his belief that the sculptural image is found within the block of stone, much as the human soul is found within the physical body. I had read that when he was sculpting that magnificent work, Michelangelo made the statement that David was concealed within the marble all the time. The left cheek of his face was already revealed and all he, the sculptor, had to do was to chip away the stone until he exposed the rest of David’s body.
