Cedar Key FFA caladium sale

Save room in your flower gardens for beautiful and colorful caladiums.

The Cedar Key FFA will be selling caladiums during the first weeks of March. The fundraiser will help support projects around the school, including the gardens and greenhouse. Ultimately, this will help fight hunger in the community as we continue to raise fresh vegetables.

The FFA is working to increase its vegetable  donations to the Cedar Key Food Pantry.

CK Woman's Club fashion show

The Cedar Key Woman's Club annual luncheon and fashion show begins with the opening of the boutiques at 10:30 a.m. at the Cedar Key Community Center. Lunch is served at noon, followed by the fashion show. Fashions are courtesy of Deja Vu

Tickets are $12 per person and are available from club members, at Deja Vu and Cedar Key Emporium. Proceeds benefit the Cedar Key School. 

 

AMVETS Post No. 88 meetings

AMVETS Post 88 meets the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. The Sons of AMVETS meets the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. The Auxiliary meets the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. The meetings are at the post home.

The Chiefland Home and Community Educators (HCE) Annual Yard Sale is from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Woodman's Lodge, 4939 State Road 26, Trenton.  All proceeds go to charities and services in the Tri-County Area.

Knitters, crocheters gathering

• The Kona Joe's knitting club meets every Friday at 3 p.m. on the deck of the eatery on State Road 24 in Cedar Key. It's free and all knitters are welcome.

• A knitting and crocheting group also meets at 2:30 p.m. on Fridays at the Bronson Public Library on U.S. 27A. 

 

AARP Tax Aide 

Free tax preparation and e-file with AARP Tax Aide is available at Luther Callaway Public Library in Chiefland. Friday hours are noon-4 p.m. and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Clients using itemized returns are asked to make an appointment after March 1, due to delays in approval of tax law changes.

St. Patty's dinner at Chiefland church

The United Methodist Men will serve the annual St. Patrick's Day Dinner from 5-7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church, 707 North Main St, Chiefland.  The menu includes corned beef and cabbage, green beans, potatoes, rolls, beverage, and dessert.  Suggested donation is $10 per adult, children 10 and under, free. Take-out meals are $10 each.

 

Quilt festival in Trenton

The 6th Annual Suwannee Valley Quilt Festival is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown Trenton. It will  feature over 30 quilt guilds and demonstrations from groups throughout Florida who will be displaying hundreds of quilts inside and outside of Trenton’s historic buildings. The Quilt Festival will also include old time crafts, antique cars and tractors as well as a number of antique dealers, food vendors and live music. Main Street will be closed to accommodate all of the activities, which will include fun events for children. Cedar Key Spring Bazaar

The Annual Spring Bazaar at United Methodist Church in Cedar Key is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  at the church. Donations will be accepted for the luncheon of  corned beef and cabbage or beef stew. 

There will also be a cookie walk and rummage sale. 

 

Antique tractors, cars at Dudley Farm

Antique tractor and car day at Dudley Farm Historic State Park is from 9 a.m to 2 p.m. The Friends of Dudley Farm CSO invite you to learn about our rich heritage as members of the North Florida Antique Tractor Club demonstrate the importance of the tractor to agriculture. They will plow a sugar cane field on a variety of vintage machines, dating from the 1930s.  As an accompaniment to the ‘old time’ tractors, the local Antique Automobile Club of America will display their cars.

Admission is $5 a car, with up to 8 occupants.

The Levy County Republican Executive Committee's monthly meeting starts with food and fellowship at 6:30 p.m. followed by the meeting at 7 p.m. at the Bronson Restaurant. Every meeting has informative Republican ideas, information and plans for the future. American Legion bingo

American Legion Post 91 bingo games are held weekly at 7 p.m. is open to Tri-County Area residents. The Post 91 bingo hall is smoke-free and no alcohol is served. Proceeds support programs for veterans and youth in the community. The post is located on U.S. Highway 129 between the towns of Trenton and Bell (across the highway from the “Field of Dreams”).

Bring your questions on Medicare

The SHINE volunteer will be at the Chiefland Senior Center from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.  to help those who have questions about Medicare, Medicare/Medicaid, Disability, Supplemental Insurance, 

Part D Prescription Drug Plans, Low Income Programs or Medicare billings.

The volunteers, part of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, provide one-on-one, free, unbiased and confidential assistance.  

If you cannot come to a site call the  Elder Helpline at 1-800-262-2243 to be referred to a SHINE Volunteer near you.  

 

Salad luncheon supports scholars 

The Yankeetown-Inglis Woman’s Club will hold their Education Salad Luncheon on Wednesday, March 20, at noon at the clubhouse on 56th St., Yankeetown.  Due to limited space the ladies are pre-selling tickets.  There are only 100 tickets available. Great Depression in Florida topic of talk

The Great Depression in Florida will be the topic of a presentation at 10 a.m. at the Cedar Key Community Center, F & 6 Streets in Cedar Key. The speaker will be Florida Historian Dr. Joe Knetsch. He will discuss his latest book “The Great Depression in Florida: Desperation and Defiance.”

The event is hosted by the Cedar Key Historical Society as part of its Third Thursday Speaker Series. 

Knetsch’s presentation will center on the life of the common people citing examples from Levy County and other surrounding areas.

A resident of Tallahassee, Knetsch holds a doctorate in History from Florida State University and has authored more than 200 articles on Florida history. Knetsch's books include “Florida’s Seminole Wars 1817-1858;” “Fear and Anxiety on the Florida Frontier,” a history of the Second Seminole War; “Faces on the Frontier,” a history of surveying public lands in Florida; and “Florida in the Spanish-American War.” All of the books will be available for purchase and signed by the author on the day of the talk.

Camera Club

Branford Camera Club meets at 7 p.m. at Cuzin's Restaurant on U.S. Highway 129, across from Scaff's  Market in Branford.  

The March meeting will be an Open Forum, focusing on preparations for the club's 2nd Annual Spring Photo Critique at the April 18 meeting.  Skip Weigel, retired local professional portrait photographer, will be the host.  The Critique and the Photo Show in May are open to the public, both for participation and/or observation.  The guidelines for the Critique will be discussed and refined during this March meeting, so please attend if you’re planning to participate in either event.  For a copy of the guidelines,  contact Carolyn Hogue .

‘Paint Out’, auction set

Cedar Key Arts Center will be hosting “Paint Out” from 1-5 p.m. with an auction beginning at 5:30 p.m. upstairs at the Arts Center. Bidders are encouraged to preview works in progress. 

Watch a local artist create a work of art in an afternoon, various mediums will be on display. 

At 5:30 p.m. an auction of the newly created work will be held upstairs at the Arts Center.

 

5th Annual Withlacoochee Wilderness Challenge

Withlacoochee Area Residents, Inc has upped the ante for the 5th Annual Withlacoochee Wilderness Challenge. A morning of fun will begin at Winding River Park in Yankeetown with a Poker Paddleon the Withlacoochee River.  Open to all persons over 18 years of age, registration fees received before March 20 are $25 per person.  Registration after that date will be $30 per person at the launch site only from 9 to 9:30 a.m. The fees include entry, water and homemade lunch of baked ziti, salad and garlic bread.  

This event is not a race, go at your own pace and enjoy the beauty of the river.  Hosted by W.A.R., Inc., all proceeds will help fund the efforts of the organization to protect and preserve Florida’s Nature Coast and its’ water sources for the benefit of everyone. 

After the “Poker Paddle”, participants and spectators will gather at the Yankeetown-Inglis Woman’s Club for awards, door prizes from our sponsors and lunch.  Those not participating in the paddle can purchase lunch at $8 for adults and $5 for children.

The city will celebrate the 100th year of its boundaries being laid out by the Chiefland Development Company. A parade, fireworks show, festival, and various contests are planned.

April 6

Bicycle ride for education

A bicycle ride on the Chiefland and Tri-County greenway trails will benefit the Levy County Schools Foundation. Registration will be at Chiefland Shopping Center, 102 N. Main St./U.S. Highway 19/98,  Chiefland. The designated ride is up to 48 miles long, with the option to ride as little or as much as you want. There will be stops at Fanning Springs, Old Town and Cross City with large food and beverage provisions until noon.  

Friends of the Williston Public Library will hold its First Saturday Book Fair, April 6 from 8:30 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. It will be held as usual in the City Conference Room at the spouth end of  Williston City Hall.

 

This is the next to last book fair for this season and as there was not a fair in March, there are many good books to choose. Come early for best selection. Prices are $1.00, hardbacks, 50cents, soft backs, 25cents for paper backs, $1.00 for tapes and videos and puzzles and ten cents for magazines and children's books. There is not a better bargain on books anywhere than the books at the "Friends" Book Fair. Get a lot of books for practically nothing for summer reading and then pass them on once you no longer want them.

The 21st Annual Antique Car Show at Ayers Health & Rehab Center returns from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 606 N.E. 7th St., Trenton.  The Suwannee River Early Ford V-8 Club, with Ayers Health & Rehabilitation Center hosts the show of cars from 1988 and older.  Registration prior to April 16 is $12 per car. Public does judging at talent show

“You Be the Judge” is the theme for a talent show on April 27 at 3 p.m. at the Williston High School Auditorium in Williston. The show is for middle and high school students to show off their talen and the audience votes for the best in singing, dancing and comedy. 

The grand prize is $1,000, with $500 for runner-up, $250 for third place, $150 for fourth place and $100 for fifth place. 

The entry fee is $25. The show is sponsored by Tri County Pregnancy Center, Williston.

Bass tournament benefits Haven

The fishing begins at dawn and ends with weigh-in at 3 p.m. in the 10th Annual Bass Fishing Tournament at the Palatka City Dock to benefit Haven Hospice. This has a $2,500 prize for first place and $1,000 prize for the big fish of the tournament. This year there's a new “Average Joe” category and the addition of activities for the whole family between 11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. There will be a Ki's Casting Tournament, Kid's Fish Tank Fishing Experience.

Zumba at woman's club

Busy Bees meet at Old Town United Methodist Church on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 1-3 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
