Libraries wrapping up summer

Readers of all ages have been exploring all things scientific this summer as the Levy County Public Library System presents “Fizz, Boom, Read!” during their summer library program.

   The 2014 Summer Reading Program is open to children of all ages. Each week will feature a presentation, craft, snack and take home goodies. For more information, call your local library or visit website, www.levylib.org.

All programs are free of charge and begin at 10:30 AM.

AMVETS Post No. 88 meetings

AMVETS Post 88 meets the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. The Sons of AMVETS meets the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. The Auxiliary meets the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. The meetings are at the post home.


Cowart to address Chamber

Members of the Greater Chiefland Area Chamber of Commerce will hear from Levy County School Board Member Chris Cowart when they meet at noon, Friday, July 25, at the Haven Hospice Meeting Room, 311 N.E. 9th Street, Chiefland. Cowart is also a member of the Levy County Schools Foundation and an entrepreneur.

Prospective members are also welcome to attend the luncheon and meeting.

Those planning on attending are asked to RSVP so there will be adequate food for the luncheon, which is free.

Check out classy cars

The Tri-County Cruisers Club meets to show off its classic vehicles from 6:30-8 p.m. on Fridays at the Gathering Table in Chiefland. Just show up to show your car and have a good time.

Clover squares dancing in Williston

Clover Squares will be holding dances every Friday in July and August if at least eight people respond before noon by phone at 352-528-3323. The time is 7 p.m., and the location is the Ornan Masonic Lodge, 650 NE 6th Blvd. (SR 121), Williston.

Post family night

(4th Friday of the month)

Join American Legion Post 91, in Trenton, for Family Night every fourth Friday at 6 p.m. The Post serves dinner for a donation of $5 for adults, $2.50 for children and will be showing a family-oriented movie. Admission for the movie is free. The American Legion Auxiliary uses the donations for the dinner and snacks, to help with programs, activities and needed supplies for the Veterans and children in our community.

The Legion Post is located on US 129 on the curve between Trenton and Bell, across from the Field of Dreams.


Post yard sale

American Legion Post 236 and Auxiliary are having a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be many items, including furniture, kitchen ware and lots of other household items, and the organization is also welcoming new Auxiliary and Post members. There are a couple of extra tables to rent or set up, for a small fee, though no food sales for eating on the property are allowed.

Donated items are always welcome. The Post is at 9550 N.E. U.S. 27 A, 1.5 miles from the Bronson traffic light towards Williston. For more information, call Marjorie McGarva at 352-486-2535.

Citrus Hospice holds market days

The Hospice of Citrus and the Nature Coast Thrift & Gift Shoppes present Herry’s Market Day, a yard sale featuring lots of cool items, on the second Saturday monthly.

The market day begins at 8 a.m. at the hospice shop at 304 N. Main Street, Chiefland.

Post bingo

Every Tuesday night at the American Legion Post in Trenton is Bingo night. Games begin at 7 p.m. The Canteen is open so that you can come early and have dinner. There are the regular items - drinks, candy, popcorn, chips, but the Post also has hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, French fries and personal-sized pizza. The proceeds from Bingo go to the Veterans and youth in our community.

Children’s Table welcomes seniors

The Children’s Table at 680 W. Thrasher Dr., Bronson, will serve a light lunch to seniors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Visit your legislator

The last Wednesday of each month State Rep. Charlie Stone, who represents Levy County in the Florida House, will be in the office at the Old Train Depot for open visits from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

AMVETS Post No. 88

AMVETS Post 88 Auxiliary meets the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the post home on State Road 24 by the Bronson Speedway.

TOPS meeting

The Levy County Tourist Development Council will hold its bi-monthly meeting on Thursday, July 31, at 6 p.m. in the Visitor Bureau office.

Food pantry yard sale

The Tri County Outreach Emergency Food Pantry will hold a mega yard sale on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 1-2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. so customers can take advantage of the state’s tax-free weekend.

All clothing is $1 and other items will be half-price.

This is the opportunity to get back-to-school clothing and free school supplies will be distributed.

Candidates forum at VFW

The VFW Post No. 5625 of Chiefland will be hosting a political forum on Friday, Aug. 1, at 6 p.m. .  There will be a steak dinner beginning at 5:30 p.m..  The VFW and its Auxiliaries have a dinner every Friday which is open to the public.  Please come and listen to the candidates who are seeking your support. 

August 2

Free evening of Bluegrass

The Dixie County Historical Society will host another evening of Bluegrass and Bluegrass Gospel music for your enjoyment on Saturday, Aug. 2, at the “Old” Old Town Elementary School Auditorium located at State Road 349 and County Road 55A. There will be Big Cypress Bluegrass performing along with The Overall Band. The music will start at 6 p.m. and will finish when the music stops (guaranteed ‘til 9 p.m.) Admission is free so bring the family and enjoy.

August 4

Groundbreaking for Williston schools

A groundbreaking for the construction of the Williston Middle High School will be Monday, Aug. 4, at 9 a.m. at the site, 100-400 S.W. 12th Ave., Williston.

Construction is expected to be complete in time for the 2016-17 school year.

Pancakes support Haven

It will be Pancakes for Haven at The Gathering Table in Chiefland, from 6 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23. Visit the restaurant for breakfast and 10 percent of your purchase will benefit Haven Hospice.

August 30

Dog days benefit for pet rescue

A Dog Days of Summer benefit for Paws & Claws Pet Rescue will be Saturday, Aug., 30, from 1 to 10 p.m. at 7550 N.W. 50th St., Chiefland.

There will be family activities, a DJ, silent auction, dinner, dancing, a bounce house, a cake walk and games.

Tickets, which cover all activities and dinner, are 50 for $25, a family pack of 100 for $40 and individual tickets for 50 cents. The cake walk and bar will be cash-only and patrons of the bar must be at least 21 years old.

Haven Hospice of the Tri Counties fall fundraiser,Fall on the Range, is at the Etheridge Family Cracker House in Williston.

November 26

Drummond Bank Community will hold its annual Bake Sale to benefit Haven Hospice in Chiefland on Wednesday, Nov. 26.


Senior Citizen Center activities

The Chiefland Senior Center is at 305 S.W. 1st St., behind the Deer Camp store on South Main Street. Activities are free:

• Monday and Wednesday, exercise at 9 a.m.,

• Monday, Bridge at 10 a.m.,

• Tuesday and Thursday, Bingo at 9 a.m. to noon,

• Wednesday class, Crafts at 10 a.m. to noon,

• Friday, Line Dancing 10 a.m. to noon,

• Shine volunteers stop by every third Wednesday to help with Medicare questions and information from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., and

• hot meals are served each weekday at noon.
