Chiefland City Commissioners approved an agreement Monday with the Suwannee River Management District to proceed toward updating and reconstructing the city’s existing biosolid digester treatment plant and associated equipment.

The total amount of the project is $418,400 with $376,560 being reimbursed to the city by SRWMD and Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The city will pay the remaining $41,840 as its 10 percent match.

Renovation of the digester should reduce nutrient loading to the aquifer, which flows to the Suwannee River, by approximately 600 pounds per year; reduce the volume of biosolids applied to the land by approximately 5 to 10 percent; reduce nitrogen loading on agricultural sites by about 400 pounds annually; and the amount of phosphorus loading by approximately 200 pounds per year.

In other items, the Tri-County Cruisers asked for permission to close Fifth Street between the NAPA store and Chiefland Speed and Machine Shop on April 22 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
