Trouble brewing for recycling

In February, Chiefland commissioners began expressing concern over the loss of inmate crews with the closing of the Levy Forestry Camp and how it might affect the city's relatively new recycling program.

"Do ya'll feel like the county is going to be able to obtain some workers," Vice-Mayor Teresa Barron asked Waste Pro representatives at the meeting.

Waste Pro representatives at that meeting said they were not sure, though the county, months later, was able to bring in workers from Marion County's Lowell Correctional Institute.

Laurie Copeland, city financial coordinator, told the commission that the county, at some point, would have to address the recycling issue. Levy County currently keeps only about 9 percent of its waste out of the landfill, she said. State laws are going to require that all counties, by the end of this year, recycle 40 percent of their waste. By 2020, she said, counties will need to recycle 75 percent.
