The pharmacy at the CVS store in Chiefland was robbed of 14 bottles of prescription painkiller at about 8 a.m. Monday, but the armed suspect was quickly nabbed as he fled on foot through the neighboring Burger King.
Chiefland Officer Matt Poppell arrested Shawn Thomas Paugh, 27 of Chiefland, after he was wrestled to the ground in the parking lot of Burger King. Poppell was able to locate the suspect with the assistance of Levy Sheriff’s Investigator Mike Bell, who responded to the store’s 911 call, followed the suspect from the store and alerted officers and deputies of the suspect’s whereabouts, according to a police department press release.
Paugh entered the store, brandished a knife, demanded all the pain medication, and the woman pharmacist said she feared for her life after he jumped over the counter and started filling a backpack with painkiller, the press release said.
After stuffing 14 bottles of Hydrocodone, worth approximately $1,000, he left the store and the staff called 911, the release said.
As Bell followed the man, Poppell encountered him in the parking lot, ordered him to the ground, but the man refused and a struggle ensued that ended with Poppell wrestling him to the ground and handcuffing him.
