Chiefland passes on water ordinance

-A A +A
By Mark Scohier, Staff writer

Though no official vote was taken, Chiefland commissioners passed Monday night on implementing an option to a state agency’s water shortage order that would have reduced offenses from a 2nd degree misdemeanor to that of a civil infraction.
Suwannee River Water Management District representative Steve Minnis told the commission that because of drought conditions, the district has put into effect a phase 3 water shortage ordinance, which for city residents means they will have to curtail water use for things such as landscape irrigation.
Violation is still a criminal infraction, Minnis said, but there is a provision that allows governing bodies to pursue and enforce  it as a civil matter, allowing residents in violation to avoid the possibility of arrest, jail time and fines.
“Does the district have any funds to offset the cost of enforcement?” City Building and Zoning official Bill Hammond asked Minnis.
“We do not,” Minnis said.
