Chiefland must deal with unfunded mandates

-A A +A
By Carolyn Risner

It is a Catch-22 situation.

Either follow the mandates set forth by the state or be left in the lurch with no financing and no resources.

That's what Chiefland commissioners learned Monday night as they were forced to deal with two time-sensitive issues.

Every seven years the city must update and re-write its Comprehensive Plans and Objectives. The Withlacoochee Regional Planning Council has the experts to help the city with those plans, but their services come with a $73,000 price tag. The agency's Bruce Day told the commissioners that amount is not set in stone and could be considerably less.

The commissioners lamented the fact there is no grant money to pay for the update and they must, therefore, find it somewhere else in their budget.

Day told the commissioners his agency plans to keep the EAR based amendments short, to the point and without fluff to parallel the city's comprehensive plan.

Should the city choose not to update this cycle, no more amendments could be added to the plan thus causing any potential growth in Chiefland to come to a screeching halt.
