A Chiefland man was arrested Saturday by investigators with the Alachua County Sheriff's Office and the Gainesville Police Department.
Michael Shaine Smith, 24, was charged Saturday on five felony charges of obscene communication and for using a phone to commit a felony when, according to law enforcement officials, he solicited sex from investigators posing as a 14-year-old girl and her 32-year-old boyfriend.
According Smith’s arrest report, Smith and the investigator posing as an underage girl “discussed having a sexual encounter.”
Smith, according to the report, then drove from Chiefland to Gainesville, where he planned on having sex with the girl. He later told police he thought the whole thing was a joke being played on him by a friend.
In total, seven men were arrested in the six-day undercover Internet sting known as Operation Tailspin, aimed at taking sexual offenders off the streets. The men were from various parts of Florida.
Smith was booked into the Alachua County Jail Saturday with a bond of $500,000.
