Chiefland Elementary student Cheyenne Walker was recognized at Tuesday's meeting of the Levy County School Board for her outstanding fund-raising effort on behalf of March of Dimes March for Babies. Walker personally raised $1,251 of the $6,690 total raised by CES students in this year's Walkmania. Carol Jones, the district's School-to-Work coordinator, introduced the award in light of her own dedication to March of Dimes.
March of Dimes representative Betsy Trent presented a trophy to CES Principal Patrice McCully and PE teacher Robin Hardee and a plaque to Cheyenne. CES received a large recognition because of the school's leading role in fund-raising for March of Dimes over the years.
Trent said that Chiefland Elementary had not only been the top fund-raiser in the area this year – beating every elementary school in Levy, Dixie, Gilchrist and Alachua counties - but had raised more than $75,000 in the last 25-plus years of participating in March of Dimes walks.
