Chiefland discusses garbage

There's going to be a little adjustment to the city's garbage rates for dumpster service - especially for two businesses with large compactor Dumpsters.

That's because the city has discovered that Waste Pro had not included pricing for compactor Dumpsters like the ones in operation at Wal-mart and Walgreen's for the City Commission meeting on Sept. 22 where the commission approved raising garbage rates in the city.

The vote was 3-1 with Mayor Teal Pomeroy dissenting and Vice Mayor Teresa Barron absent to attend a county budget meeting.

City Manager Grady Hartzog apologized to the commissioners as he said the failure to include it and to bill Wal-mart for its compactor Dumpster had cost the city about $12,896.89 annually.

The total loss of the city's 8.2 percent franchise fee is about $72,000 in revenue in past years.

While Wal-mart will start being billed for its compactor Dumpster pickup, the city's only other compactor customer, Walgreen's has been billed and paid the city's fee.

As a result of the discovery of that billing problem, Hartzog said another had been found. He said Waste Pro had been signing up, billing and collecting directly from customers in new areas of the city rather than directing them to City Hall where the city would handle billing and collect its fees.

As a result, the commission adopted new commercial Dumpster fees.

The new garbage pickup rates, which went into effect on Tuesday and are the first increase in 10 years, are:

90-gallon containers: $17.76 for once a week pickup for one can and $26.65 for two cans; twice-weekly pickup is $35.87 for one can and $49.24 for two cans.

Dumpster service cost begins at $72.83 for a 2-yard container picked up once a week rising to $426.93 for a 10-yard container to be picked up twice a week.

Can service is $26.75 for one can once a week and $52.50 for two cans; twice-weekly pickup is $52.50 for one can and $79.25 for two cans.

Compactor dumpster service starts at $141.94 for once-a-week pick up for a 2-yard container to $6,553.30 for 20-40 yard containers picked up four times a month. for five-times-a-week pickup of a 10-yard container.

Dumpsters without compactors stat at $72.83 a month for weekly pickup of a 2-yard container rising to $1,021.88 a month for a 10-yard container picked up five times a week.
