Every 15 seconds a child dies because of the lack of clean water. The Chad Reed Memorial Well will provide clean water to over 1,000 children for the next 20 years.
In honor of fallen Dixie County Sheriff’s Captain Chad Reed, a 5K Run/Walk and BBQ fundraiser will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2010, from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Dixie County High School at 16077 S.E. U.S. Highway 19, in the heart of Cross City.
Capt. Reed was killed in the line of duty, after a lifetime of service in Emergency Services in Dixie and Taylor Counties.
Shortly before his death, he attended a church service and learned about the plight of children, sick and suffering because of lack of access to safe drinking water.
He made a commitment to do something about it. A bullet put a stop to Reed’s dream, but his family and friends have taken up his cause to build a well for children.
The 5K run/walk is part of their fund raising drive to raise $15,000 to build the “Captain Chad Reed Memorial Well” in India or Guatemala and to fund a scholarship for local children in his name.
The public can join the effort by participating in the 5K, or by purchasing lunch at the BBQ afterwards at the Cross City Park behind the Courthouse. Adult meals are $7 and kids' meals will be $3.50.
Strollers and wheelchairs are permitted for the 5K.
There will be entertainment, raffles, games and giveaways.
Also, there will be a Kid’s Fun Run for ages 5 through 12 years.
