The Levy County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Florida Forest Service partnered to celebrate Arbor Day with Chiefland Elementary School. John Keyton, senior forester; Greg Marshall, Levy County forester and Dana Langford, education coordinator, Levy County Soil and Water Conservation District, helped with the event.
The CES kindergarten students were addressed by Marshall who shared the history of the first Arbor Day celebrated on April 10, 1872, and its founder Sterling Morton.
Keyton went over the many uses of tree products from furniture and syrup to the cellulose found in many ice cream products and Forest Fire Prevention.
Each class was taken outside to name and plant their own tree, which were long leaf pines donated by Half Moon Nursery.
Each student was also given a seedling pine tree to take home to plant on their own donated by Andrews Nursery.
