The Cedar Key Seafood Festival this weekend is still set, but the open house event at the Cedar Keys Light Station on Seahorse Key has been cancelled due to the federal government shutdown, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
"Decisions about rescheduling any of these activities will not be made until employees return to work," wrote USFWS representative Jeffrey Fleming in a statement Wednesday. " Additional cancellations for activities set to occur beyond October 20th will be considered in the days ahead if necessary based on timing of the government’s reopening and logistical requirements."
The USFWS had planned to celebrate its national wildlife refuges this week, but the lapse in appropriations that began the beginning of October is forcing the agency to cancel events throughout the Southeast region, an area that's made up of 10 states and 129 refuges.
Other than Seahorse Key, which is managed by the Cedar Keys and Lower Suwannee National Wildlife refuges, events in Florida to be canceled also include those at the Crystal River and Merritt Island National Wildlife refuges.
