No one was injured Monday morning when a rental car driven by Harry Lawrence Coleman, 78, of Chiefland, jumped a curb, plowed through the flower bed and into a patient room at Haven Hospice at about 9 a.m. Monday.
Chief Robert Douglas said about $10,000 damage was done to the structure and City Planning/Building Director Bill Hammond has OK'd the continued use of the building as long as the damaged section is kept closed off.
Douglas said Coleman told him he was pulling into the parking lot on his weekly trip to deliver flowers and snacks to patients at the hospice when the car revved up. Douglas said Coleman was cited for careless driving.
The crash knocked out a window and air conditioning unit, toppled a TV armoire onto the patient's bed and left electrical wires sparking. Power was turned off to the building, but was quickly restored after the wiring was fixed, Douglas said.
No one was injured in the accident and that was a miracle, Douglas said.
The patient occupying the room had left just moments before to get a cup of coffee.
