Bronson parks and rec leader hired

-A A +A
By Mark Scohier, Staff writer

Bronson officials have chosen one of its own to serve as the leader of the town's new parks and recreation department.

Curtis Stacey, a Bronson High School graduate who studied health and human performance at the University of Florida for several years, was chosen Monday night out of four candidates for the position.

But Curtis was almost not chosen. Council members Berlon Weeks and Jason Kennedy early in the meeting stated their preference for Mike Whelan, who, according to them, came with the most experience and would be best suited for organizing a new department. With other council members each choosing other candidates, Whelan was the front runner for the job.

Council member Beatrice Roberts then asked that the decision be based on a ranking of cumulative points, and Curtis, with the tie-breaking vote of Mayor Franklin Schuler, emerged as the winner, beating out Whelan, Dietrich Stewart and Rodney Thomas.

Stacey was asked by the council when he could start. He said he'd be in the following day.
