Bronson man: Town reneging on arrangement

-A A +A
By Mark Scohier, Staff writer

Only one Bronson council member at a sewer workshop Monday spoke up in support of local business owner Jim Beck’s claim that town officials are breaking a promise made years ago.

Beck said he was offered free connection to the town’s new sewer lines in exchange for land he donated for use as a utility easement. Council Member Berlon Weeks said the town should honor that agreement.

But some council members said Beck never got it in writing, and that his land donation is not enough to keep him from paying the full connection fee, which, according to the plan offered Monday night, would cost Beck about $21,000 to connect his two restaurants.

“I don’t think you are being fair,” Beck told the council, shortly before leaving in frustration.

“What, you want it for free?” Council member Aaron Edmondson said.

Beck said some businesses, because of a grant, have already been hooked up for free. He said it creates an unfair advantage for those businesses, not having to find the money to pay for the proposed connection fee.
