The Bo Diddley Memorial Park, also known as the Bronson Youth League Park, is getting a light for its asphalt basketball court this week thanks to newly appointed Bronson Parks and Recreation Commissioner Melody LaFlam.
Town councilmember LaFlam saw the need for lights when she first visited the park shortly after Mayor Franklin Schuler assigned her to the position in late September.
“I felt so bad for those young men playing basketball in the dark, I thought about just staying and leaving my car headlights on for them,” LaFlam said. “I knew then that something had to be done.”
The new light will be placed on a timer along with the existing parking lot lights so that the community can utilize the facility during all regular park hours.
“I’m very excited for the 17-20 young men I see playing basketball out there on a regular basis,” LaFlam said. “As soon as I knew for sure it was happening I went out to tell them they were going to have lights.”
LaFlam said that her next step is to meet with Bronson Youth League President Garry Mitchell to develop a comprehensive plan for improvements to the park. “There is so much to be done – we need a plan with the big picture.”
