The Bronson Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department donated $1,000 to the tri-county area Toys for Tots Monday night during the Town of Bronson Council meeting.

Fire Chief Scott Bulson presented Dave Hutcherson with the check, and in turn Hutcherson presented Bulson and fellow firefighters Dave Reinstra and Jerry Horton with certificates of appreciation and commemorative Toys for Tots coins.

“We give the coins away to people who donate significantly,” Hutcherson said. “Every year the coin changes – this is our 61st year in operation.”

Much of the money was raised through the department’s annual boot drive held at the intersection of SR 24 and Hwy 27-A in October.

The fire department’s donation will go directly to the children and families of Dixie, Gilchrest and Levy counties, according to Hutcherson. He added that the money has the potential to buy up to three times its worth in toys because of the buying power of the national Toys for Tots organization.

Last year the organization served more than 1,900 children in the three counties, with 568 from Levy.

The Town of Bronson Council also plans to donate to the group and has invited them to the town’s Christmas party to set up a Toys for Tots registration booth for local families in need of support this Christmas. The town party is open to all Bronson area residents and will run from 6-8 p.m. on Dec. 16.
