Bronson boys could be even better

Bronson High boys basketball has accumulated lots of banners in Kelly Beckhams 23 years of coaching.

With most of the players back from last seasons Sweet 16season, theres no reason why the Eagles wont have another banner year.

We have almost everybody back, said Beckham, who notched his 500th career coaching win last season. We graduated two. All of the starters are back.

Which would make Bronson a favorite to win an 11th district title under Beckham.

Bronson plays in Class 2A District 5 along with Lafayette County, Oak Hall, Hawthorne, Trenton, Bell and Branford.

Returning starters include junior point guard C.J. King, senior two guard Dion Thomas, senior center Jermey Mayes, junior forward/center James Rivers and senior three guard Terrence Dukes.

Others who will see plenty of playing time are sophomore forward Kelby Barber and senior center William Harris.

Rivers was the leading scorer last year. Beckham expects a balanced attack this season.

Rivers and Barber are the tallest players, both at 6-foot, 2 inches.

Were not big at all, Beckham said. Our strengths are our speed and quickness. We want to play good defense. Well apply a lot of man-to-man pressure. Well try to dictate the tempo. This bunch plays together very well.

That should make topping last seasons 14-16 record a very reachable goal.
