The body found east of Otter Creek by hunters on Friday afternoon has been identified that of DeAnna Lee Stires, 18, of Brooksville who was reported missing on Jan. 1, according to a Levy County Sheriff's Office press release.
"Hopefully this will provide some closure for some friends to the south,” said Lt. Scott Tummond, head of investigations for the Levy County Sheriff's Office. He said it is being investigated as a suspicious death. “We have a family in Hernando County that I am sure wants answers.”
Detectives worked diligently with surrounding agencies in their effort to identify the remains found by a hunter in a wooded area on Friday, Jan. 18. Late Saturday an autopsy was completed by the 8th Circuit Medical Examiners Office in Gainesville, but no cause of death is known, Tummond said.
The work of the Medical Examiner provided enough information for detectives to compare to a missing person report filed in Hernando County on Jan. 1. Tummond said the examiner's office is also likely waiting on results of tests.
Detectives of the Hernando County Sheriff's Office and the Levy County Sheriff's Office are working together to determine the cause of death. Tummond said because Hernando County Sheriff's Office has more information in the case, the Levy investigation will defer to that investigation.
According to records at the Hernando County Clerk's website, Barry Stires filed on behalf of DeAnna Stires in 2011 for a domestic violence injunction against a man. A permanent injunction was granted.
