Audits begin in Bronson

Accountants from Purvis Gray and Company arrived Monday morning at the Bronson Town Hall to begin preliminary work for the past three fiscal year audits, starting with the 2004-05 and the 2005-06 books.

“I think those years will be the most involved,” said recently hired town clerk Kelli Brettel.

Bronson’s financial records have been plagued with controversy including former officials and employees accused of theft and dishonesty, questionable monies spent on the contentious Jackson House and a former town clerk accused of poor record keeping as well as refusing to make available the general ledger to council members.

Without the financial audits in order, the town remains ineligible to apply for grants that could help the community grow. “Our goal is to have all of the (audits) finished by the end of the year,” Brettel said. “That way, we can submit applications for the 2009-10 grant cycle.”
