The National Wildlife Refuge System celebrated National Wildlife Refuge Week across the country. Inviting you to join in, refuges hosted open house events, trail walks, wildlife programs, and bird walks throughout the over 100 million acre system of public lands tasked to provide habitat for the present and future generations.
Locally, Lower Suwannee and Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuges hosted their annual Cedar Key Light Station Open House. Families related to past light keepers visited. Scientist returned to the UF Marine Field Research Station to revisit fond memories, and lighthouse lovers took pictures of the unusually short structure.
Last winter, the Florida Lighthouse Association held their annual meeting in Cedar Key, and the National Lighthouse Association hopes to meet there in 2011. Keep your eye out for the next opening on the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge’s historic structure in July. For more information call: 352/493-0238, ext 223.
