Adventures with chickens, Part II

-A A +A
By Ashley Andresen, Staff Writer

I arrived home late Friday afternoon and started my usual routine of making sure everyone on my small farm had plenty of food and water. And by small and farm, I mean one acre in the middle of farm country – one wild acre I share with a few cats, a dog and a coop full of hens.

Now my adventures on the farm started early on, with rusty chicken wire, a dog that was busting in and chickens that were busting out. Having rewired the bottom half of the coop and patched up a few other weak spots in the wire, I thought things were finally settling down. However, I did not take into account the wild critters that share our abode, the raccoons and opossums I constantly catch eating the cat food out of the dish on the the back steps. Rather, I should say, my pup, Nyla, points them out to me. Be it by sound or smell, that dog knows when an animal besides one of my own is eating out of that dish. Even if it’s another cat, from inside the house she knows, and goes crazy barking and carrying on.
