AARP October meeting notes

-A A +A

Our guest speaker was Bob Burkhardt, district coordinator for AARP Tax-Aide,  He told us that once again this year, he and his crew of 34 volunteers will be preparing taxes, at no charge, for residents of the Tri-County Area.

As with most volunteer agencies, they are always in need of help.  If you would like to be a trained volunteer, please contact Bob at (352) 463-8936 or RCBurkhardt@earthlink.net.

Once again, this month, we were fortunate to have Mary Lee Tanka from SHINE at our meeting.  She spoke on the upcoming opening of Medicare Part D. Enrollment will open on Nov. 15 and close on Dec. 31. If you decide to make changes in your Part D Coverage, you will have to do it during that time frame.

In Chiefland, a SHINE Volunteer will be at the Senior Center Wednesday, Nov. 17; Tuesday Nov. 30; and Wednesday, Dec. 15, from 1:30 - 4:30 p.m.

They will be in Trenton at the Trenton Public Library on Friday, Nov. 12; Wednesday Nov. 24; and Wednesday Dec. 8, from 9 a.m.  to noon.

They will be in Cross City at the Dixie County Public Library on Friday Nov. 12; Wednesday Nov. 24; and Wednesday Dec. 8 from 2 to 5 p.m. To check on other locations in your area, please call 1-800-262-2243.

Our Community Coordinator reported that things are booming at the new Trenton Senior Center with many activities going on five days a week.  He also told us that on Friday, Oct. 29, there will be a special program featuring Jim the Magician followed by a giant pizza party and a guest piano player.  If you have not been to the Center, this Friday will give you a perfect opportunity.

A special "Thank You" comes to our members from Rick Weder, director of the Gilchrist County Senior Food Pantry for the over 300 cans of food that were donated by chapter members.  There was also a nice basket of cash that was collected.

Chapter President Randy Durden took time to read up on the amendments that are appearing on our ballot and gave us an explanation of each.

After the many Committee Chairs gave their reports, a delicious lunch was served by our Hospitality Committee and enjoyed by all.

A total of 74 people were in attendance.  We brought in five new members at this meeting, bringing our total membership to 174.
