The 2017 Suwannee River Livestock Show and Sale surpassed 2016 totals with $926,080 paid to FFA and 4-H exhibitors.

The two-weeklong show concluded March 22 with an auction of 357 hogs and steers. The total number of livestock sold was down from 385, but more than the $918,000 sold the previous year.

Marti Smith, Suwannee River Livestock Show and Sale bookkeeper, said there were 233 hogs, 42 fat steers and 82 feeder steers sold this year. That does not count other livestock, such as sheep, that were sold, but not at the auction.

“The event was very successful. Everything went smooth with no major glitches,” she said.

Chiefland Middle High School Senior Chapter Advisor Dallas Locke said the Chiefland FFA was strong and active in all aspects in market and non-market animals.

“We did awesome,” he said. “We had the champion and reserve champion feeder steer and we placed in ever showmanship category. We did great and I don’t see it slacking off in the foreseeable future.”
