Next year, at about this time, the City of Chiefland will celebrate its 100th year of incorporation. The Chiefland Centennial Celebration has been in the works for about a year, and volunteers on the committee overseeing its arrangement have recently come up with a schedule of events for the affair.
The event, set to happen April 5–6, 2013, will include a community fish fry and dance, a parade, historical booths, displays and demonstrations, contests and cook-offs. The event culminates on a Saturday evening with a fireworks show at Strickland Park.
City building official Bill Hammond, who has spearheaded the effort to organize the event, said he was inspired by visiting a town about a year ago celebrating its own 100 years of history.
“We got together as a group and thought about it, and thought about putting a celebration together a little bit differently,” Hammond said.
The celebration is expected to cost about $40,000, Hammond said, with $25,000 to $30,000 of that money going just into the firework show.
