Toys for Tots Distribution

            The annual Toys for Tots distribution for Levy County will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at First Baptist church in Bronson.

            The distribution for Gilchrist County will be on Wednesday from 11 .m. to 6 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Trenton.

            Distribution for Dixie County will be on Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Cross City.

            The annual event is sponsored by the Marine Corps Reserve and is coordinated in the Tri-Counties Area by Pat and Vince Arcadi.

 
4-H Christmas party

The Levy County 4-H is hosting their Annual Christmas Party on Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. at the Levy County Extension Office.

Everyone is invited, without regard to race, color, sex, age, national origin, or religion.  Each family is asked to bring a covered dish to share and a small cake or cookies for the Cake Walk. 

All the 4-H Clubs in Levy County are asked to prepare an activity or a Make-and-Take to share with everyone.

Chiefland City Commission

            The Chiefland City Commission will meet in special session at 5 p.m. to review a short list of job applicants for the position of fire chief.

                  The commission will hold a seconde special meeting at 5:30 pm. To evaluate Police Chief Robert Douglas and consider renewing his annual contract.

                  The commission will meet in regular session at 6 p.m. Among the items being considered is the first reading of a landscape ordinance and firs service contracts with Levy County and Fowlers Bluff.

 
SHINE offers help with Medicare, Part D 2010  Enrollment


Do you know how much your current Part D Drug Plan is going to cost next year? Do you know the cost of your drugs in the Deductible and in the Gap? Do you know when you will hit the Gap? Do you know if there is a less expensive plan out there that covers your drugs?

Medicare Part D’s Annual Enrollment Period runs through Dec. 31 and SHINE, a volunteer Program with the Florida Department of Elder Affairs can help answer questions with free, unbiased and confidential assistance.

Bring your Medicare Card,  current Part D Plan card, and your prescription drug bottles.
There will be a worksheet to complete.  To find a SHINE site near you or to be referred to a volunteer, call the Elder Helpline at 1-800-262-2243.  

Next site dates  will be at the Cedar Key Library from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday and at the Chiefland Senior Center on Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 
Tuesday
H1N1 vaccine available at CFCC Levy

Central Florida Community College has partnered with the Levy County Health Department to offer H1N1 influenza vaccinations to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the CFCC Levy Center, 114 Rodgers Blvd, Chiefland.

            The vaccine is recommended as protection from H1N1 influenza, informally known as swine flu, by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People at greatest risk for H1N1 flu infection or transmission include children and young adults, caregivers of very young children, pregnant women, health care and emergency medical services personnel, and people with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease.

The Greater Chiefland Area Chamber of Commerce will host a mixer for one of its members Badcock Home Furniture & More from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Suwannee Valley Players hold auditions

Suwannee Valley Players announce auditions for the spring musical Phantom Of The Op'ry , a musical stage show by Tim Kelly; lyrics by Michael C. Vigilant; music by Gerald V. Castle; piano/vocal score arranged by Richard Threet

This is a musical restaging of Gaston Leroux's famous mystery. No heavy stuff, just fun aplenty as the Phantom in this country version laughingly makes a star of "too good to be true" Christine Swansong. The show features eleven musical showstoppers; lots of suspense and action with the music; "dead" bodies fly across the stage, a chandelier "drops" on the audience, the mysterious phantom disappears and reappears. Auditions will be at 7 pm at the Chief Theatre. Show dates are March 4, 5, and 6, 2010 at 8 p.m. and March 7 at 2:30 p.m., and March 12 and 13, 2010 at 8 p.m. and March 14 at 2:30 p.m. The show will be directed by Susan Lastra, president of the Suwannee Valley Players; for more information check the website at svplayers.org or call the theater at 352-493-ARTS, leave a message and your call will be returned.

 
Yankeetown-Inglis GOP to party

The Yankeetown-Inglis Republican Club will be holding its annual Christmas Party at the Lions’ clubhouse on U.S. Highway 40 and 59th Street starting at 6 p.m.

Dinner will be provided by the club board at 6:30 p.m. There will be a gift exchange (men to bring a gift for man and women bring a gift for a woman) – the gift costing between $5 and $10.

The popular band “Just Us 4” will provide entertainment. Good food, good friends, good music and fun.

American Legion Christmas Dinner

Members of American Legion Post 91 will hold a Christmas dinner and membership meeting on starting at 5:30 p.m. Cost of dinner is $5 worth of food items to be donated to the Trenton Food Bank and shared with the Sheriff's Office food collection. Dinner will consist of ham, mash potatoes, candied yams, salad, veggies, rolls and tea or coffee. Members are asked to please bring a covered dish or a dessert to share. There will be a gift exchange and participants are asked to bring a gift with a maximum cost of $10. $ The Legion buckle will be raffled.

Holiday Duet marries chopper, color red with seasonal music

Actors singing traditional songs of the season, admission to the “Art of the Chopper” and “Red” exhibitions, and tasty holiday treats are all included in the Holiday Duet program offered by the Ocala Civic Theatre and Appleton Museum of Art of Central Florida Community College.

                        Admission is $18 per person and tickets are available at the Appleton Museum, Ocala Civic Theatre and online at  Holiday Duet features the Ocala Civic Theatre’s leading actors in a 90-minute musical program of holidaymelodies. Show times are Thursdayand Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sundayat 2 p.m.

In addition to the music and the admission to the exhibitions, guests will enjoy holiday treats and coffee. Doors open at 5 p.m. on Thurday and Friday, 10 a.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.

The Appleton’s “Art of the Chopper” exhibition is a collection of 30 one-of-a-kind motorcycles designed and built as contemporary art, and “Red” is a thematic display of art and artifacts from the museum’s collection that highlights the meaning of the color red from cultures around the world.


 General admission to the Appleton is $6 for adults; $4 for seniors 55 or better and students 19 and over; $3 for youths ages 10-18; and free for members, CFCC students, children age 9 and under, and active military personnel and their immediate families. 
A special fee is required for admission to the “Art of the Chopper” exhibition. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays and closed on Mondays.www.AppletonMuseum.org and www.ocalacivictheatre.com.

Legion Post hosts Bingo

American Legion Post 236 of Levy County will be holding their weekly Jackpot Bingo at 7 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m.  The Post is located at 9550 N.E. U.S. Highway 27A, southeast of Bronson.  For more information, please call 352-486-5003.

Turkey shoot benefits 4-H team

There will be a Benefit Turkey Shoot to raise money for the livestock judging team on Saturday, Dec. 19 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Levy County Extension Office in Bronson. The cost is $3 per round or $25 for all 10 rounds. Sign-up begins at 8 a.m. Concessions will be available on the grounds. All proceeds will help fund the team's trip to the national competition. Holiday extravaganza at Lighthouse Word

The Lighthouse Word Church will be hosting a Christmas holiday extravaganza titled, "It's Christmas Time" with the international singing group, Shekinah Glory, on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 7:30 p.m.  The performance will be a mixture of Christmas and traditional holiday music and drama.  Appetizers and holiday baked goods will be served after the performance. 
 Also, Shekinah Glory will be ministering at the Lighthouse Word Church on Sunday, Dec. 20, at 10:30 a.m.  The church is located three miles east of Chiefland on U.S. Highwsay 27A.  Call 493-1554 for more information.

 

 
“Christmas is Coming” cantata at Old Town and Chiefland

The combined choirs of the Old Town and Chiefland United methodist Churches will present “Christmas is Coming” in two performances.  The first presentation will be on Saturday at the Old Town United Methodist Church at 7 p.m.  The second performance will be at the Chiefland United Methodist Church on Sunday at 4 p.m.  All are welcome to come and enjoy the performances.

Dixie Humane Society Thrift Store

Come visit the Dixie County Humane Society indoor outdoor yard sale on Thursdays Fridays and Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Society is located across from the bike trial in Old Town, off of U.S. Highway 19 on County Road 349 North. Look for the signs.

While shopping for bargins check out available adoptions on Fridays & Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Donations can help support the non-profit, volunteer Dixie County Humane Society. 

 
Dunnellon Community Thrift Store open

The Community Thrift Shop has opened a new store at 11871 Illinois Ave., in the old Sertoma Club building behind the Route 41 Dry Cleaner across from Dunnellon Printing on Illinois Avenue.

Thrift Shop hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Mon. through Sat.

In addition to providing a place to donate gently used clothing, household and decorative items, it gives the community a place to shop for low cost necessities.

Operated by a volunteer organization, the Thrift Shop has over the years given back to the community between $12,000 and $15,000 annually.

Guardian ad litem program

    Volunteer to advocate for the best interest of abused and neglected children in the court system.  In Levy County, there are about 80 children in the child welfare system.  Help ensure these children are heard and not forgotten. No legal background is necessary.

American Legion Post 383 karaoke on Saturdays

    American Legion Post 383 in Old Town has karaoke with Stacy every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Prospective members and volunteers are also welcome. Post 383 is for all veterans and their families.

 
Boys & Girls Clubs want clunkers

    Florida Boys and Girls Clubs are looking for “Clunker Cars” to be donated as a way of raising funds. The benefits offered for donating include a tax write off for the donors and knowledge that the old clunker is helping a “Positive Place for Kids”. If you want to donate a car, the Florida Clubs can be reached by calling 1-800-246-0493.

 
TOPS meeting

    The Chiefland TOPS group meets at St. Albans church on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Both  men and women are welcome.

 
Rotary Clubs

    Chiefland Rotary meets at noon Wednesdays at BubbaQue’s, Main Street, Chiefland.

    Williston Rotary meets at 11:45 a.m. Tuesdays at the First Presbyterian Church, 247 NE 1st Street.

 
Grand Slam Bridge on Mondays

    Grand Slam Bridge, with two tables in play, is held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Chiefland on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Those interested in participating are asked to call Joan at 493-0279.
