Looks like Williston High School graduate Jiwan James is making waves in the Philadelphia Phillies organization.
James, 21, a switch-hitting outfielder for the Class A Lakewood BlueClaws minor-league team, extended his hitting streak to 22 games last week, setting a new record for the franchise and setting the longest hitting streak so far this season for the South Atlantic League. On Sunday, however, James ended his streak at 24 games against Kannapolis.
In last Thursday’s game against the Kannapolis Intimidators, James led off with his record-breaking single to center. He also doubled in the third inning, finishing the night 2-for-6.
James entered that game batting .316 with four extra-base hits, 12 runs and eight RBIs in 21 games.
Previously, West Virginia’s Jarek Cunningham led the league with an 18-game hitting streak. James tied the franchise record, previously held by Ambiorix Reyes in 2001, the previous night with a 1-for-4 game.
The current South Atlantic League hitting streak record belongs to Mitch Hilligoss, who had a hit in 38 straight games in 2007.
This year, Phillies prospect Harold Garcia hit in 37 consecutive games for Class A Advanced Clearwater.
The Phillies drafted James in the 22nd round as a right-handed pitcher out of Williston in 2007. He pitched nine games that year with the organization’s Gulf Coast League Club, but did not play the following season.
He returned last season as an outfielder with the Class A Williamsport
short-season squad, art of the New York-Penn League. There, he hit .264 with a home run and 13 RBIs.
He was promoted to the BlueClaws before the season this past spring.
