Chiefland High School graduate and softball standout Amie Biehl received a full academic scholarship to continue playing at the College of Central Florida.
Biehl will likely play shortstop or centerfield.
Biehl’s tuition is covered for two years, and she will also receive a stipend for books each semester, she said.
“It’s going to help out a lot,” she said. “My parents are really happy.”
Biehl said she had a tryout at Central Florida on June 30. The Patriots’ coaches placed her in center and wanted to test her arm, asking her to throw pop-ups to home.
Biehl said the plan was for her to be evaluated by throwing four balls home. But the coaches saw her first throw — a straight-line screamer to the plate — and took her on the spot.
“The coach said ‘All right, we’ve seen enough, let’s go,’ ” Biehl said.
She was a key part of the Indians’ 20-4 campaign in 2010. During her senior year at Chiefland, Biehl hit .500 with 11 RBI and 38 runs, mainly batting second in the lineup. She also posted an .882 fielding percentage.
“With winning so much, it helps your confidence,” Biehl said. “When I had the tryout, I really didn’t have any doubts.”
Biehl said she plans to major in radiology for a future career as an x-ray or MRI technician. She also said she wants to transfer to either Florida State University or the University of Florida after earning her Associates degree.
