Alden Mark Davis, a Chiefland High School varsity golfer, won the Greater Tampa Junior Golf Association’s Tarpon Springs event on Dec. 6.
Davis, also a junior golfer at Chiefland Golf and Country Club, won by two strokes with an 82 in the boys 13-15 Division.
“Yeah, it was great,” Davis said.
Playing at Wentworth Country Club, the CHS sophomore battled not only the course, but the weather, too. Rain and wind made golf difficult.
“The ground was mud,” he said. “It made shooting the ball much harder.”
After a difficult front 9, Davis recovered to shoot 38 on the back to take the prize, his first on the GTJGA.
Davis started playing golf about 2 1/2 years ago, after an accident sidelined his baseball and weightlifting. Turning his focus to golf, he now plays five to six times a week, watches the Golf Network “Every day” and also plays on other area golf tours, including the Florida Junior Tour and Hurricane Tour.
And sports is in his blood. He comes from a family of competitive weightlifters, including his older sister Amber Davis, a 2004 Chiefland High graduate.
His favorite golfer is Mike Weir, winner of the 2003 Masters Tournament.
“He’s left-handed and small, like me,” Davis said.
Davis takes golf seriously, and plans to use it as a pathway to college. He hopes to one day get his PGA Tour card.
Alden and Logan Smith, also a varsity golfer at Chiefland High, will be competing on Sunday at Bellair Country Club in Clearwater, the oldest golf club in Florida.
During the prep sports golf season, Davis was the strongest area competitor in the District 1A-4 Tournament, finishing 10th overall at Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville with an 85.
