Letter: Chiefland needs animal protection laws

Some time ago while mowing a vacant lot on the south east side of Chiefland I observed a brown medium sized dog chained up under some trees next door.

After looking closer I realized this animal had no shelter from the weather.

I contacted the Humane Society of Levy County who informed me they had no responsibility for the City of Chiefland. I then contacted the appropriate people in Chiefland who informed me there was no requirement for the shelter of animals.

Why do some people have the Michael Vick attitude that it’s my animal and I will treat it as I wish? Why don’t the City fathers write better ordinances pertaining to the humane treatment of animals? Why don’t the good citizens of Chiefland encourage better ordinances pertaining to the treatment of animals so that violators can be dealt with?

I am not a resident of Chiefland but my heart goes out to mistreated animals wherever they are.

no more laws, let sleeping dogs lie
Chiefland does not "need" more laws. Contrary to popular belief, laws do not grant us more freedom. Let us examine what is being asked here in this letter; The writer, wants to usurp some level of control over the owner of the dog that he/she feels is being mistreated and or neglected.

It is the writer’s opinion that the animal is being mistreated by its owner. Opinions are to be had by each and every one of us. That is the nature of being human. It is also our nature if not our desire to rule over our own lives and property; our country was founded upon this principle- manifest destiny. More laws infringe upon this principle and contravene with our right to manifest destiny

So, I say to this writer and anyone else who deems it necessary to interfere with the way others conduct themselves in their own house and or yard, back off the call for more rules and laws.

Not to mention, the writer is not from Chiefland and considers it needed to call upon us to enact more laws to make him/her more comfortable in our city. Let sleeping dogs lie.

Animal Protection Laws
It's not a question if the man live in chiefland or not. It's the importance that someone, anyone, who is from anywhere has a law inforcement office to report animal abuse to. I agree that too many laws are made interfering with peoples properties although some are good. But don't animals have a right also to have protection from bad people and owners since they can't speak for themselves. More animal laws arn't interfering with your house, they just protect pets as laws protect your children and every town should have them.

Animal protection laws
To the contrary, it is a question of whether or not the writer of this “cry for new laws” live in Chiefland or not. If the interest of all citizens were the same no matter the geographical location then there would be no need for individual city and or State laws, we could all exist under a uniform code directed by a centralized government, thus doing away with the idea of "Federation" (the formation of a political unity, with a central government, by a number of separate states, each of which retains control of its own internal affairs. online dictionary).

I am not saying that there is no need for animal protection laws, though I could care less I am not an animal owner, what I am saying, however, is that someone from outside of our community should not be so concerned about our local laws that he/she would make a call for more laws as opposed to, if he or she was so concerned for the animal's safety, going up to the owner and expressing this concern personally. More laws are not the answer.
