Joseph Thermon Walker, 94, of Old Town, died on Sunday July 25, 2010 at his home. Mr. Walker was born in Bell Meade, and was raised in the Everglades, in one of the only areas where the Everglades touch the Gulf of Mexico.
He served in the U.S. Army. In 1987, he moved to Horseshoe Beach from Naples, and in 1993, after the storm of the century, he moved to Old Town. He was a private boat captain for 19 years, later becoming a commercial fisherman and fishing guide. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and baseball. He was of the Pentecostal faith, last attending the Church of Jesus Christ in Horseshoe Beach.
He is survived by his wife, Jimmie Louise Walker of Old Town; sons, Benjamin Perry (Deborah) Walker of Naples, Kenneth Dudley (Martha) Walker and Rex Stephen Walker both of Old Town; brothers, Robert Arnold Walker of Cross City, Robert “Bobby” Walker of Jennings, Donald Walker of Naples, and Verna Lee Walker of Dunnellon; 18 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sons, Joseph Walker Jr. and Alan Walker, daughters, Shirley Walker and Memory Louise Walker, sister, Alberta Jean Cox and brothers, Lloyd Walker and Reginald Walker.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 29,at 11 a.m. at the Rick Gooding Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Allen and the Rev. James Butler officiating. Burial will follow in Cross City Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
