Fauna with a smile

Photos:

Wildlife and whimsy collide in Santa Fe College's new exhibition of Earl and Mari Robbins' photography in "Animal Attitudes." The collection of 35 color digital photos will hang in the President's Hall Gallery, upstairs in the Administration Building at Santa Fe College through Aug. 18.

The photos were selected from a collection of nature shots taken over the last seven years. Earl Robbins started the series when he began taking photos of gators and other wildlife at Paynes Prairie. He added to his digital menagerie while traveling on behalf of his work for the University of Florida.

After a bit, Mari Robbins embraced the hobby, and the two started planning vacations around opportunities to photograph animals. Trips were made to zoos and wildlife preserves around the country.

Mari Robbins, Earl Robbins' partner in Hoggetowne Photography, chose pieces for "Animal Attitudes" with a lighthearted vibe. "I think she went with cute," he said.

Many of the subjects display anthropomorphic attributes, but nothing here was enhanced with digital wizardry. The photos were captured using traditional methods: "lots of studying and standing around," he said.

Included in the exhibition are photos of hippos, grizzlies, snow owls, baby baboons, zonies (zebra and pony mix), pandas and more. Many of the shots were taken at wildlife preserves in California, Alaska, Georgia and Arizona.

While the Robbins may have spent a lot of time waiting, some shots came accompanied by risk. While in the Out of Africa Wildlife Park, a preserve outside Sedona, Ariz., their truck was charged by a rhino that missed the vehicle by only a foot.

This show is their only scheduled exhibition as the couple splits their time between photography, publishing, a record company and computer consulting.
