On Aug. 2, the Town of Bronson will hold the second and final reading of an ordinance amendment that increases council members’ pay by 100 percent.
In February, the council added an extra meeting to its monthly schedule due to an increase in public business, but a decision was not made as to whether council members would be compensated for the additional time.
The current rate of pay for one monthly meeting is $400 for the Mayor, $300 for the Vice Mayor, and $250 for council members, according to Town Clerk Kelli Brettel. The new wording lists the pay $400, $300, or $250 as “per meeting attended (rather than per month).”
After much discussion earlier this month, the council decided not to make the decision retroactive. The increased pay will begin from the date the ordinance is passed.
This week the council discussed adding additional language that would ensure pay would not exceed two meetings each month, even when workshops and extra meetings are added to the schedule.
Bronson Attorney Steven Warm said he would amend the document to include those conditions before it comes before the council at the next meeting.
The amendment also includes a provision that states absences must be excused for “good and sufficient reason” if a councilmember is to be compensated for a meeting that he or she did not attend.
