Temporary closure at Shell Mound beginning Sept. 28

The Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge Shell Mound Unit fishing pier, both foot trails and the road will be closed beginning Monday, Sept. 28, for improvements to the parking area and road for approximately two weeks or until work is completed, Refuge Manager John Kasbohm said.

The site is at the end of County Road 326 adjacent to the Shell Mound County Campground.  Kasbohm said the area will be closed for safety reasons as trucks and other heavy equipment will be operating in the area.

“If possible, we will open on weekends for our visitors, but this will depend on our progress spreading tons of lime rock and securing heavy equipment for safety,” he said. To find out if the area is opened on the weekend, call the Refuge at 493-0238, ext. 223 on Friday afternoon.
